"Pioneering Innovation in Waste Water Treatment"
Shripad Khatav, a technocrat turned entrepreneur, started S.S. Techno Services Pvt Ltd – the Company, with just a small investment of Rs. 20,000 in the year 2000, has recently rolled out its plan to join “100 Crore Club” in the next fiscal year and also geared up to launch two new innovative products.

Leading Business Magazine Business Today selected SS Techno for three prestigious SME awards for 2011 – Star SME Overall ,Best Green SME, Best SME for Innovation in the category of small enterprise.

"I started as a consultant for the chemical industry in the year 1997 after 15 years of Industrial experience. Our company SS Techno Services Pvt Ltd forayed into manufacturing Heat and Mass transfer Systems for the Chemical and Food industry in the year 2001 and offered scrubbers, evaporators and dryers," says Khatav.

By 2003, SS Techno decided to focus on Turnkey Evaporators and Dryers in Food Industry and have supplied a number of state of art, Milk Evaporators and Milk powder plants till date.( Up to the capacity 5 lac litres milk per day), Instant tea and Fruit juice evaporators were the other systems supplied.

Increasing industrialisation already started attracting the attention of environmentalists and Khatav – a foresighted technocrat - saw a huge potential in the area of waste water management. By 2005 many State Governments revised the regulatory norms for waste water treatment which mandated the industries to have ZLD (Zero Liquid Discharge) plants while setting up any new industrial facilities.

SS Techno developed Unique in-house Technology for highly sophisticated ZLD Plants for various Industries such as Pharma, Food , Engineering, Textile , Paints, Distillery and Electronic hardware etc. SS Techno ZLD plants recover Crystal clear water up to 90% plus from the effluent. This water can be reused/ recycled after secondary treatment, if required. In some applications, the solid waste separated itself fetches attractive revenue as a by product.

Stricter Governments' Regulatory Norms have turned out to be a boost to the business. “ Till 2007 , we were a 8-10 Crore bracket company, but after the change in waste water discharge norms, our company witnessed a major jump in Business and we expect to touch INR 70 crores by the end of this current fiscal,” Khatav notes.

Khatav further adds that Evaporation is a State of art application and selection of right design is crucial for plant performance, product quality and lifecycle costs. Further elucidating on this niche area , he adds that these solutions for waste water treatment need to be customised, since each stream of waste water has its own characteristics .One needs to study and to evolve a totally Tailor-made solution.

Khatav estimates the current market size for ZLD plants in India to be roughly around INR 500 crores. “We have a market share of 15 per cent in India and further we have also developed substantial customer base in other countries for our innovative solutions’” he says.

"SS Techno is a now an established brand .Our Company has already commissioned over 130 plants in last seven years and receive repeat orders from the existing customer base.” Khatav states.

He asserts that Innovation based on Technology has always been at the forefront of SS Techno ,which is its inherent strength and strong differentiator. The company has developed inherent culture of innovation and continuously works towards improving existing applications and simultaneously developing new applications through Research and Development .It has inhouse softwares ,keeps itself constantly abreast with the changing trends and works continuously to meet the challenging future demands of the industry. He attributes the success to strong work force ,of which more than 50 per cent are engineers, who offer best solutions to the clients. The company has developed adequate infrastructure to cater to the growing demands and has three manufacturing facilities. The company is setting up a new state of the art facility in Chakan, Pune ,which will be fully operational by March 2013. Khatav shares the announcement of subsidiary company this year to cater to the export market spread across USA, Latin America, West and South- East Asia.

Mr Khatav concludes, "Globally, We are the only company to have developed the process to convert distillery waste to 95 per cent organic solids and we have commercialised the process. Our multi effect evaporators installed across various industries produce crystal clear water and we are now ready with the next generation technology to produce water of drinking level purity." He is a strong believer in creating technology epiphanies and is ready to launch two new technical innovations in the next two years. “We have completed the bench scale studies and are now ready with two new products and will shortly target introducing them in the market," he declares.
