BPMA Panvel Campus - An Epitome of Architectural Grandeur
The Ghost City of Belapur has been transitioned into a maritime hub, and who other than
R C Singh, Chairman, B P Marine Academy (BPMA), could have brought in the transition. Starting off from a 921 sq feet space in the year 1997, the academy now runs a wide range of D G Shipping approved pre-sea and post-sea courses from its more than a lakh sq feet space centre in CBD Belapur, Navi Mumbai.

Having successfully trained 2,20,000 candidates till date for modular courses and 7000 candidates for pre-sea courses, the academy is being seen as an icon in itself. It would soon be providing simulator training for many of these courses. It has the privilege of offering the youth of this country, especially the youth of Maharashtra, a prestigious pre-sea Training course for Deck Cadets and Ratings ie (GP) and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering. It has committed to train aspirants to join the Merchant Navy as Deck Cadet under the approval/guidelines of Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), Ministry of Shipping, Government of India.

The academy boasts of having world-class infrastructure and facilities. It aims at giving its cadets a realistic training, and with the very aim, it has successfully been able to equip itself with the most up-to-date equipment and gadgetry that are normally found in the latest ships of the world.

Classrooms of ultra modern type, equipped with latest teachings aids like interactive boards, over head projectors, D L P-projectors, bio-metric attendance systems, etc are its forte. The academy’s library is a kind in itself, having collections of various marine related publications.

Very proficient faculty, including some very experienced mariners and academicians, impart training in the institute. The faculty is ably assisted by various visiting faculties. The training provided at the Academy is at par with the training provided overseas, and it is for the reason it has won honors, titles and accolades by various national and international dignitaries.

For the fitness of the cadets, physical training forms an essential part of the curriculum. BPMA provides the students with facilities for indoor and outdoor games. Also are encouraged in the institution sports, hobbies and cultural activities, which give the students a platform to show their talent. Debates, quiz competitions and ship visits etc form part of the cadet's routine. The academy is facilitated with computerised-modern gymnasium.

It even has a well-equipped simulator centre with wheelhouse and radar facilities. The jetty available on campus has boats of all kinds, and it is here where the trainers are taught boat handling, both powered and otherwise. Seamanship laboratory of the academy is facilitated with provisions for learning rope-work, chipping, painting, lifting gear, ladders and practical ship handling. Provision in the form of subsidised fees for students belonging to the weaker financial background is also available at the institute.

The Panvel campus of the academy, designed in the shape of a ship, is an epitome in itself. The architecture who designed the Panvel campus has won Maharashtra’s best architectural award, and what could be a better example than this to depict its architectural grandeur. BPMA is about to embark on new phase-II at Panvel campus, which will again be one of its kind in the entire world. To say the least, the academy has lately been awarded Best Infrastructure amongst the marine Institutions by Big Brands Research. The Chairman himself has been awarded the Ram Charitra Manas Award by All India Ports Labour Association and the Excellency Award 2003 by Lions Club, CBD Belapur. The academy has been awarded ISO 9001-2008 Quality Management System Certification by ABS Quality Evaluations Inc, and the courses taught in the institute are rated 'Outstanding/very Good' by Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA).

Foreign specialists, who have visited the institute, seeing its grandeur and the quality training it provides, are of the view that the task accomplished by Singh in five years would have taken them not less than twenty years. It is soon to become the best marine academy for imparting marine education in the world, as is stated by some of these experts.
