Innovative Approach towards Storm Water Management

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Rain Water Harvesting

As a result of climate change there has been a drastic change in rainfall pattern and handling unprecedented shower is a big challenge for cities. GSFC too faced the problem of water logging and flooding in the industrial as well as residential premises because of the unexpected rains. Experts chalked out and implemented an appropriate plan to handle the storm water.

Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GSFC), situated on the National Highway number eight is spread over an area of approximately 330 hectares covering industrial complexes, office units and residential township. The Dashrath village in the NorthWest, Bajuwa village in the East and National  Highway on the West direction surrounds GSFC. Nature's FuryThe city receives about 990 mm of average annual rainfall. However, over a period of last five to six years, probably as an after-effect of climatic changes, the rainfall pattern has changed drastically resulting into major spells of showers in short duration of time shrinking the season of monsoon to virtually weeks and days. This uneven distribution of rainfall has essentially made the management of the storm water a big challenge with cities receiving huge quantity of water in a span of few hours, viz the city of Vadodara in last five years has been receiving above normal rainfall with the increase reported in the range of 25 percent to almost 100 percent.  This inadvertent seasonal change has been responsible for disruption of normal life flooding the towns and cities.    GSFC excessively has been no exception to the nature's fury. In actual fact the issue of

Since the inception of GSFC in 1962, the company has understood the plights of the farmers, communicated directly, worked to develop and reach the most modern techniques of scientific agriculture to the farming community in Gujarat and other states. The article presents various initiatives undertaken by the organization to take on the challenge of food security, our country is facing.

Agriculture, the mainstay of the Indian Economy, is an important driver of macro economic performance and is also a critical element for the growth strategy. As per the Economic Survey, during 2008-09 , Agricultural sector witnessed 1.6 percent growth as against  4.9 percent   in 2007-08. It has also witnessed decline of its share in the GDP from 24 percent in 2001-02 to 17.1 percent in 2008-09, however, even today; approximately 52 percent of the total Indian population depends on agriculture for its livelihood. Indian agriculture is set to receive a 'New Deal' with the Government committed to formulate a comprehensive package for reforms and policy changes vital for increasing farm incomes, productivity and making the sector globally competitive.  The alarming deceleration in the rate of growth of agriculture, the yawning gap between the performance and potential of agriculture sector, the set back to the diversification process towards cash crops, fall in input growth and declining factor productivity calls for special attention. The Eleventh Five Year Plan puts greater emphasis on reversal of the deceleration in agricultural growth and identified the areas whereby 4 percent growth can be achieved. Thrust on increasing area under irrigation, favorable terms of trade

Energy Conservation - Critical to Reduce Cost of Operation

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Energy Management

Rising energy cost is a major concern for the chemical industries, as this forms a major part of company's operational expenses. However, meticulous approach and proper planning can result in significant reduction in energy cost. GSFC has initiated and implemented various steps towards energy conservation to manage the energy cost in their industrial units, which have been discussed in this paper.

Since inception of Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited (GSFC), mammoth importance is given to Energy Conservation and is considered a vital tool to reduce cost of operation and thus enhance profit margin. In recent era, it has also assumed a newer and better role, ie, to retard rate of global warming by reducing fuel consumption hence reducing emission of Green House Gases (GHG). Obsolete technology, lower capacity utilization, casual metering and monitoring standards, lower automation, poor raw material quality and poor handling, operating and maintenance activities etc are the major reasons identified for higher energy consumption at GSFC. To increase efficiency of energy consuming operation by overcoming the reasons mentioned, GSFC puts up relentless effort. Energy Conservation an Imperative It has been experienced that at GSFC, cost of energy consumption amounts from 5-40 percent of total cost of production, which depends on the type of product, technology, production capacity, automation, stream days etc. In this era of competition, the margin available with the producer to reduce the cost of operation thereby increases the profit margin. Energy conservation has always been an imperative at GSFC. Energy conservation has been achieved at GSFC through various ways viz integration of two
