On the banks of river Narmada is the industrial town of Bharuch; the cradle of Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Limited (GNFC). Promoted jointly by Government of Gujarat and Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals Ltd, GNFC came into existence on May 10, 1976. Since then the Company hasn't looked back and put the entire Southern belt of Gujarat including Bharuch on the industrial and Chemicals map of India.
GNFC established itself firmly with diversified product portfolio from its initial fertilizer business to chemicals and later to Information Technology. GNFC plants have been operating consistently above the installed capacities, year after year, which is a testimony to its plant and operation capabilities. The devotion of employees and their innovation and creativity defies vintage and other state of affairs of large chemical plants. All together bear the onus of productivity and profitability of the organization. Quest for GrowthThere is more to GNFC than what meets the eye. Fertilizers business is only a part of the company's growing sphere of activities. In fact, industrial chemicals have been the dominant driver of growth for the GNFC during the recent times. GNFC has also made a foray into the arena of e-security towards potential future growth in the info tech sector. At GNFC, the quest for the growth is inherent and insatiable. The tradition of high production levels and growth is envisioned clearly. As a part of an evolved strategic thrust, the focus is on consolidating and driving growth through core competencies., absorbing technologies from the world's leading technology providers and latching on to business areas with high potential. Revamps and Retrofits at GNFC Ammonia Plant
Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Case Study
GNFC has implemented major retrofits and revamps to maintain low production cost and achieve optimum energy level for the energy intensive Ammonia production process, which are discussed in this paper.
Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company (GNFC) located at Bharuch in Gujarat has fuel oil based single stream Ammonia 1350 MTPD, Urea 1800 MTPD complex with other Phosphatic Fertilizers - ANP, CAN, AN MELT and industrial chemical manufacturing plants for Formic Acid, Methyl Formate, Acetic Acid, Methanol and Weak & Concentrated Nitric Acid. The Ammonia plant, was commissioned in 1981, is based on high pressure (80 barg) Texaco Gasification of fuel oil, which is used as the feedstock. Points of progressive developments in operation of Ammonia plant with complex fuel oil based technology to reach a new height of capacity utilization are summarized in this paper. To achieve the desired result of minimum production losses, emphasis has been laid on efforts to maintain better health of plant. Due to fuel oil based technology, specific energy requirement is much higher in comparison with that of reformer plants. Thus implementation of innovative ideas is vital in order to achieve optimum energy level and maintain low operating cost. Considering the higher cost of grass-root project for Ammonia production, which results in an increased production cost, makes the project less viable in the changed scenario and hence retrofits and revamps become attractive options.

Originating as a Fertilizer Company, today GNFC has diversified its profile to become a major player in the field of Chemicals and Information Technology. All through its corporate existence, GNFC has embarked on a people-centric growth objective, rooted in facilitation of the means and motivation for initiating individual enterprise, triggering team-spirit, strengthening the ties with its stakeholders, social development and fulfilling the economic imperatives of the country.
Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Ltd. (GNFC) is a joint sector company promoted by the Government of Gujarat and Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd. (GSFC) at Narmadanagar, Bharuch District of Gujarat, which is well connected on the national rail and road network that knits the country. GNFC is located in a very prosperous industrial belt consisting of refineries, petrochemicals, fertilizer and Asia's biggest industrial estate at Ankleshwar. Dahej port is just 40 kms from the GNFC site A Look at the Past Since its incorporation on 10th May 1976, GNFC has developed into a multi-product company with an asset- base that exceeds Rs 3,000 crore. GNFC started its operations by setting up a mega, world's largest, single stream fuel oil based Ammonia-Urea complex along with its auxiliary facilities at a total cost of Rs. 399 Crores in 1981. Subsequently Ammonium Nitro Phosphate and Calcium Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizers were added during 1991.Company went ahead with massive diversifications and expansions to manufacture and sell chemicals and fertilizers, such as Methanol, Formic acid, Ammonium Nitrophosphate, Calcium Ammonium Nitrate, Nitric acid, Acetic acid and Ammonium Nitrate Melt. GNFC started to produce Aniline and Toluene Di-Isocyanate (TDI) through its subsidiary Narmada Chematur Petrochemicals
'Meltdown did not have a direct impact on our profitability'

GNFC sells all the manufactured chemicals in the domestic market, thus exports are not a deciding factor for the company's profitability. Guruprasad Mohapatra, Managing Director, Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Ltd shares his views on GNFC's performance during the downturn and future plans in an E-mail Interview with Chemical Engineering World
- Guruprasad Mohapatra Managing Director, GNFC How has GNFC maintained the competitive edge during the times of high competition, fluctuating feedstock prices and product demand?Despite the meltdown Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers Company Ltd (GNFC) has set 33 new records in terms of production, marketing and dispatch. GNFC is the country's largest manufacturer of Acetic Acid, Methanol, Formic Acid and Aniline. It is the only manufacturer of TDI in India for products where the company enjoys competitive edge viz nitric acid, acetic acid, formic acid and Toluene Di-Isocyanate (TDI). The production was maximized to reduce costs and to maintain its top line.Production was optimized in case of certain products to avoid any stock built up at GNFC since the costs were sliding almost on daily basis. Competition from imports could be managed through right pricing. Imports became costlier due to appreciation of dollar that led to higher CIF prices on account of global meltdown. Domestic demand in some of the imported material reduced leading to higher stocks thereby creating liquidity crunch for importers. This resulted in minimizing / stopping the imports flowing into the country thus maintain the domestic market share. GNFC being the largest domestic supplier for many of
Prudent Approach to Avert Mishaps

Disaster management is strategy implemented when any type of catastrophic event takes place once any event disrupts normal operations putting human lives at risk. Post Bhopal Gas Tragedy Government of India made various amendments to the then existing rules and getting more stringent to bring about accountability of one and all.
India is developing as a key global player in the industrial and technology sector. Rapid industrialization has increased the hazard, risk and vulnerability to the industry and the environment. Major chemical Industrial disasters are low in frequency but are very significant in the terms of loss of lives, injuries, environmental impact and property damage. Frequency and severity of chemical disasters has increased in last few years due to rapid development of chemical and petrochemical industries and increase in size of plants, storage and carriers, especially in density populated areas. There are more than 1500 MAH units and other small and medium sized industries all across the nation and new industries are also establishing at a rapid rate. Overwhelmed by the dimensions of one of the world's worst industrial disasters, the Bhopal Gas Tragedy that took place on 3rd December 1984, Government of India (GOI) took series of steps in the direction of Disaster Management. Many new acts and rules were enacted moreover some of the then existing rules were amended to make it more stringent to bring about accountability of one and all. It was also felt to shift the focus from (2R to 3P) Rescue and Relief oriented
