Clean Development Mechanisms: Way to Go

The God gifted pleasant environment's contents have been imbalanced due to chaotic industrialization. The direct or indirect unfavorable effect of development is billowing of emission of Green House Gases (GHGs) like CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs, SF6 etc, which are the consequential of Industrialization.

Industrialization is the need of the day and the worldwide focus is on increasing industrial output but unfortunately we have never looked behind the development and thought of the adverse effect of so called rapid and haphazard development. It is always splendid but it would be better if we could sense the adverse effects, which are directly related to the industrialization. Now we talk of world becoming smaller and have started realizing the kind of problems that our future generations may have to face, if we couldn't go with sustainable development. The God gifted pleasant environment's contents have been imbalanced due to chaotic industrialization. The direct or indirect unfavorable effect of development is billowing of emission of Green House Gases (GHGs) like CO2, CH4, N2O, HFCs, PFCs, SF6 etc. which are the consequential of Industrialization. These GHGs have formed a blanket over the earth and are the major cause for the Global Warming which day by day is reaching towards an alarming level. Aiming the sustainable development, there is a need to reduce the emission of GHGs to the environment. In order to endorse the sustainable development, Kyoto Protocol was established on 11th December 1997 and come in to

GACL Focus Product - Anhydrous Aluminum Chloride

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Special Report

GACL is the largest producer of Aluminum Chloride in the country. Keeping in view the need to consume chlorine captively to the maximum possible extent GACL is focused on manufacturing value added products. The company plans to increase the capacity to 3000 MT/ month during the approaching months.

Anhydrous Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) is a compound of aluminum and chlorine. The anhydrous material has a very interesting structure: despite being the halide of a highly electropositive metal, its bonding is principally covalent. This is seen in the fact that it has a low melting and boiling point (it sublimes at 178 °C), and it conducts electricity poorly in the liquid state, unlike ionic halides such as sodium chloride. It exists in the solid state as a six-coordinate layer lattice. This melts to a four-coordinate dimmer, Al2Cl6, which can vaporize, but at higher temperatures this dissociates into a simple AlCl3 species analogous to BF3.Anhydrous Aluminum chloride is highly deliquescent, and it can explode in contact with water because of the high hydration. It partially hydrolyses with H2O, forming some hydrogen chloride and/or hydrochloric acid. Aqueous solutions of AlCl3 are fully ionized, and thus conduct electricity well. Such solutions are found to be acidic, indicating that partial hydrolysis of the Al3+ ion is occurring.  AlCl3 is probably the most commonly used Lewis acid and also one of the most powerful. It finds widespread application in the chemical industry as a catalyst for Friedel-Crafts reactions, both acylations and alkylations. It also

Sustainable Growth: Key Focus Area for Chemical Industry

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags:

Gujarat Alkalies and Chemical Limited (GACL) has bagged the National Energy Conservation Award for fifth consecutive year and the reason why so, you realize as you step inside the factory premises of GACL. Sitting in his plush office, Guruprasad Mohapatra (IAS), Managing Director, GACL talks about the economic revival after the meltdown, GACL's integration philosophy, growth strategy and future plans to become more than Rs 4000 crores company in an exclusive interview with Mittravinda Ranjan of Chemical Engineering World

  - Guruprasad Mohapatra Indian economy is not isolated from the global economy. How much time in your opinion may the economy take to emerge completely from the shadow of the meltdown? Agreed to the point that Indian industry is not isolated with respect to global recession but simultaneously the economy is not export driven as the exports from India consist of the order 20-30 percent. Outsized population and domestic demand against availability are the advantages that remain with domestic industry. Within this GACL is less affected as its exports turn over constitutes only 10 percent of its total turn over.Per capita utilization of most of the products has been low in India; thus the domestic demand had not declined severely working in the favor of manufacturers for domestic sector while the recession was at its peak. But the demand devastation in the West effected in accessibility of surplus supply in the domestic market. Nevertheless, various signs of recuperation and improvement have been observed in demand. As in case of basic chemicals presently there are no production cuts indicating that recovery is underway. To a certain extent revival of India will depend on recovery of US and European markets however

Handling Hazardous Chemical Cargo

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Logistics Safety

Logistics service providers industry has flourished as India emerged as one of the favorite destinations for the chemicals industry. Adhering to the safety norms is an imperative when it comes to handling liquid cargoes in the chemical industry. But the industry has only few organized players equipped with capabilities to provide world-class services compliant with international norms.

The last two decades has seen an increase in India's involvement in international trade and enhanced trade relations with the more industrialized nations of the west. With tremendous amount of traffic flowing to and from USA, Europe, Gulf, Russia, Brazil, China and other countries of South East Asia, logistics services have assumed great importance. Over the last decade, a large number of small logistic service providers have mushroomed across the country especially in and around the main port cities. However, the logistics industry still has only a few organized players equipped with capabilities to provide world-class logistics services, which are compliant to international norms. When it comes to transporting liquid chemical cargo, it is even more important for exporters to ensure that the safety norms are adhered to and appropriate precautions are taken. Further, different countries have different safety norms and packing requirements, which have to be taken into account while processing the cargo prior to stuffing and loading. Keeping these complex requirements in mind Hazardous CargoTypically called 'Dangerous Goods', these are substances or materials, which have been determined to be hazardous in terms of posing a risk to health, safety, and property when in transport. An equivalent term, used almost

Indian Petrochemical Industry

Posted on 21 January, 2010 | Tags: Ethylene Capacity, Industry Outlook, Petrochemicals, test

Petrochemicals dominates the global chemicals market with a share of almost 40 percent. The coming years are expected to see the petrochemicals industry undergoing a major metamorphosis, particularly with the Middle East as a major petrochemicals supplier and China emerging as a major processing hub and end-use market - Bhargav Vadia

Petrochemicals are the downstream of the oil and gas industry - an industry whose products affect our daily lives. Petrochemicals are a part of our daily lives - the carpeting on which we walk, plastic soda bottles from which we drink, clothing we wear, fertilizers that grow our crops, tires we rely on for transportation, paints we use to brighten our surroundings, pharmaceuticals we need to remain healthy, cosmetics, and many other applications. Petrochemicals get their raw material - known as feedstocks - from the refinery: naphtha, components of natural gas such as butane, and some of the byproducts of oil refining processes, such as ethane and propane. These feedstocks are then cracked to obtain the building blocks of the petrochemical industry: olefins, that is, mainly ethylene, propylene, and the so-called C4 derivatives, including butadiene - and aromatics, mainly benzene, toluene, and the xylenes. These products are then processed to produce a wide variety of consumer and industrial products. Global Petrochemical Industry Petrochemicals dominates the global chemicals market with a share of almost 40 percent. The growth of the chemical industry, currently 2-3 percent above the average world GDP, is likely to face a slowdown in the coming 2 years owing
